SP&S 760 Caboose - 4/29/26 Work Party
It was a beautiful day! We had John, Jay and Rob working today. I’m very grateful for Jay who donated enough OSB to sheath the entire roof! Thank-you so much Jay!
We started by taking all the tarps off and taking down all the scrap wood that was used to support the tarps. John and Jay sorted it all out and organized all the wood under the caboose. I didn’t get a picture, but it looks great.
John and Jay installed the last tie rod on the south end and made sure all the rafters were screwed in place. I installed 1/4-20 x six inch bolts through the dovetails to secure the north fly rafter. We decided to hold off on screwing down the OSB until we have the frieze boards installed to make sure the membrane is installed correctly. We laid the OSB out on the roof to support the tarps.
The metal roof was taken off the east bay window. It will need to be cleaned up and painted. Anybody have a sandblaster? We are only going to work on one bay at a time so we have a reference.
Finally, we put a separate tarp over the bay window, and used the two big green tarps to cover the caboose.
We have enough 1x4 to make car siding for the south end of the caboose. He has a big Grizzly planner that produces an incredible amount of saw dust! My old Delta Home-craft shaper cut the tongue in one pass. That is a big cut! We did about 150 feet when the thermal cutoff tripped. This Friday we will cut the groove. That should be a lighter cut.
